Possession of 28.5 grams or less of marijuana is not a crime punishable by imprisonment. The officer will not arrest the perpetrator if the offender can provide appropriate identification and promises to appear in court. The offender faces a fine of $100 if convicted of the misdemeanor offense.

Possession of more than 28.5 grams might result in a six-month prison sentence and a fine of up to $400. If you have a doctor’s “prescription,” you can carry up to an ounce of marijuana on your person in California. This “prescription” grants you a “Cannabis card,” which you can use to purchase marijuana from “Cannabis Clubs” (a physical establishment you can buy marijuana from with a card). Furthermore, marijuana possession is only a misdemeanor in California, and it is wiped from your record after only two years (misdemeanor only applies if there is no intent to sell).
